We said we accept anything other than a three-point loss for the Syracuse Orange football team, and somehow someway we got it against the Virginia Tech Hokies. Courtesy of some late-game heroics from Garrett Shrader (and Damien Alford), SU pulled off a 41-36 victory at Lane Stadium.Despite what looked like a decrepit offense coming in, Virginia Tech was strong on the ground from the start. They dashed out to a 7-0 lead on the first drive of the game, and we were off to the races from there. Sean Tucker punched it in from 28 yards out (on a fourth and short, no less) on the very next drive to tie things up for the Orange.Tech would take a 14-7 lead to start the second quarter, and then things got weird. Garrett Shrader led a what woulde been the game-tying drive with about two minutes to go in the half, but the Hokies returned a blocked extra point to take a 16-13 lead https://www.sooutletstore.com/Andre_Cisco_Jersey-40. Virginia Tech tacked on a field goal to make it 19-13 with a little over a minute to go, but Syracuse was able to sprint down the field and get to the goal line... only to burn two timeouts and then miss a short field goal as time expired. As you know, this was pretty infuriating and would factor into the rest of the game.Syracuse switched over to the Shrader-focused offense in the third quarter, and it did pay some dividends early on. The quarterback ran in a touchdown from 21 yards out (his second of the game) to take a 20-19 lead, but the Hokies were ahead again just five minutes later, at 26-20. Another Shrader-specific drive ended with the Orange grabbing the lead once more at 27-26 early in the fourth. But Virginia Tech hit a field goal just a few minutes later to go up again, 29-27.Syracuse offense stalled before Tech added another TD to make it 36-27. Shrader led yet another late-half scoring drive, capped by a 12-yard touchdown throw to Courtney Jackson, to make it 36-34. After the defense held Tech in check, Shrader led a stunning drive that ended with an incredible 45-yard touchdown throw to Damien Alford to take the 41-36 lead with 19 seconds remaining. SU would hold off the Hokies from there.This looked like another big Tucker game early on, and the scouting report in advance woulde suggested as much given Tech struggles stopping opposing rushing attacks. But despite some big breaks, Syracuse drifted away from traditional handoffs as the game wore on. Still, Tucker wound up with 112 yards and a score on 20 carries, plus the aforementioned score.Shrader, as you figured by now, was the bulk of the offense for Syracuse. He was 16-of-34 passing for 236 yards and the two aforementioned scores. The QB also had 174 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on 22 carries. Jackson caught seven passes for 86 yards and a TD. Devaughn Cooper hauled in four balls for 36 yards and Tucker had two catches for 14 yards. Alford (the TD), Sharod Johnson and Anthony Queeley each caught one ball as well.Defensively, things looked rough early before Syracuse sort of figured things out for a quarter-and-a-half. Tech averaged well over five yards per carry and really did whatever they wanted on the ground all day.Honestly, this game coulde been decided by special teams and inexplicable coaching decisions one of which may be the decision not to replace Justin Lustig with another full-time special teams coach. Rutgers Wrestling held their annual media day last week at the APC in Piscataway and I broke down Coach Goodale press conference at that time. The media on hand was also able to interview select wrestlers which was a great chance to get individual perspectives on the upcoming season, the shortened and Covid impacted past two seasons, and their expectations heading forward. I was able to briefly talk with Rob Kanniard, Sebastian Rivera, Mike VanBrill, and John Poznanski, all of whom were incredibly forthcoming and answered my (sometimes confusing) questions fully and honestly.I first sat down with redshirt freshman Rob Kanniard, the anticipated 157lbs starter whose season was cut short last year after he couldn compete at the Big Ten Tournament. Kanniard is my dark horse pick to surprise people this year and after hearing Coach Anthony Ashnault speak so highly of him during an interview a few weeks back, I asked Kanniard about that praise: t great Ashnault is mentioning me because I working really hard in the room and that hard work is paying off and wee starting to see a lot of good results. Outside of a 23pt win at North Carolina (JEALOUS), Georgia Tech has kind of had a rough go of it so far this year. What kept this team from taking a step forward? From The Rumble Seat (FTRS): Honestly, it squarely the coaching staff. Geoff Collins was never really successful before getting the job https://www.mhoutletstore.com/Will_Mallory_Jersey-33, he was a .500 head coach previously, and his tenure just looks like a coaching staff in over their heads. There been no player development on either side of the ball. Our secondary, full of 4 recruits and upperclassmen, has been a liability under him for the 3rd season in a row. Theye not put in positions to succeed, and he touts himself as a defensive head coach.It seems like a staff of recruiters, and not coaches who can develop players or a scheme that will succeed at this level.Collins will also do everything except take responsibility in his press conferences after losses that what has grinded on me the most. Outside of his buzzwords, he regularly blamed Paul Johnson, either directly or indirectly over the first two seasons, and now he just talks about the istoric transformation he has put the team through, expecting anyone to be impressed with his 9 wins in 2.5 years. At this point in his tenure, he the worst coach in the history of Georgia Tech football by winning percentage.Every week, he talks about how the other team did something for a half or the whole game that we weren prepared for, and are apparently incapable of adjusting to. It embarrassing.Q2. RB Jahmyr Gibbs is clearly the superstar of the offense. Talk a little about him and what he does well. FTRS: Gibbs is an absolute beast and is truly a joy to watch. He very regularly can make something out of nothing running behind our struggling offensive line. He averages a little over 5 yards per carry, and if youe watched much of us this season, you would realize what a victory that is.He also caught 25 passes out of the backfield and averages 15 yards per reception https://www.mhoutletstore.com/Michael_Mclaughlin_Jersey-121. In short, he an absolutely dynamic player, and I badly wish he had a stronger supporting cast around him to really let him shine.He one of those guys that stands out on TV just to the casual observer - he has next-level talent.Q3. Evaluate QB Jeff Sims performance in 2021, if you please FTRS: Sims has had an up and down year. He left the first game injured, but he won the starting job back against UNC in week 4 and hasn looked back since. He has the highest upside of a QB wee had on The Flats since Justin Thomas. He one of those guys that makes throwing the ball 50 yards in the air look effortless. He has a quick release, and has made some stunning passes in his young career.He also very dynamic as a ball carrier, and youl still see a lot of option concepts featuring him and Gibbs in our ground game. With our struggling offensive line, optioning a guy and having an extra blocker has been something our ground game leans heavily on.I really think Sims has performed admirably this year, especially when he not running for his life because the offensive line turned someone loose. He has such a high, high upside, and I want this coaching staff to show more development in him, because he clearly has the talent to be a world beater. Sims is at his best when Gibbs is a threat on the ground to keep defenses honest. In obvious passing situations, he just often not given the time to progress through his reads before he needs to take off.Q4. I pleading ignorance here: I haven watched any GT football so far this year. What do the Jackets run on defense, and why should that concern Miami? FTRS: We generally base in a 4-2-5, but youl see a lot of 3-3-5 as well, based on what the offense is doing. The 3-3-5 is what beat up UNC so badly earlier this season, but it hasn been as effective since as our front 6 in that formation get pretty easily pushed around in the running game.This is another one of those situations where it doesn feel like our players are put in a position to succeed by the coaching staff. Wel stick with the 3-3-5 and a soft front for an entire half and get pushed around before anything changes, but by then it too late. Wee also seen a myriad of blown coverages for easy TDs this season https://www.mhoutletstore.com/Allan_Haye_Jr_Jersey-104, and how you do that with 5 DBs on the field is beyond me.I do think our personnel are best-suited for this though, as most of our talent is in the secondary, so that may be what the coaching staff is trying to lean on.If Tech comes out in a 3-3-5, and Miami still struggles to run the ball, it will be a long day for the Canes.Q5. Who are some of the playmakers to watch on defense? FTRS: I really wish I had a good answer for you here, but no one has really stood out this year. Our secondary with Tariq Carpenter and Jaylon King is talented, but theye often seemingly schemed away from the ball. On the line and at linebacker, no one has really stood out, which has been a disappointment all season, though it does look like the pass rush has improved from last year.Outside of the UNC game, we have one of the worst havoc rates in the entire country. If Miami can take care of the football, there a lot of yards and points to be had against the Yellow Jacket defense.Q6. This is year 3 of the Geoff Collins era in Atlanta. How are you feeling about it? How much longer will he have to prove he and the program can take a step forward?FTRS: Ugh. If you can tell by my previous answers, I ready for a change. His buyout drops significantly at the end of next season, so hopefully he either turns shit around or gets fired then - it would make a lovely Christmas present Michael Scibelli Jersey.He owns some of the worst losses in Tech football history, and multiple opponents have set their scoring records against us under his tenure. He also responsible for some of the worst attendance I can remember at Tech football games... I know the pandemic is still a factor, but our home attendance has been atrocious, and it because he hasn put anything to get excited about on the field in 3 years now.Maybe I being overly negative, but from following this team for the last 3 seasons, he seems to care much more about his own personal brand and twitter presence and blowing smoke up the local media ass about his ccomplishments and istoric transformation than he does about the on-field product. He incapable of giving a candid answer when questioned.This year Georgia Tech team is one of the most talented all-time by recruiting rankings, and you won be able to tell by watching them play on Saturday.Q7. Alright, time to call your shot. How does the game play out on Saturday and what the final score? FTRS: I think Miami has turned things around and pretty easily routs a bad Georgia Tech team. Saturday defeat in Manhattan felt like the end of the era. If losing at home to West Virginia was rock bottom, then the way TCU Football played in the Little Apple feels like the seventh circle of hell. I don even know how to write these even more it all so depressing. All that Gary Patterson has done does not get erased by an number of or sub- seasons, but the fanbase absolutely positively has the right to be frustrated, angry, and find the performances of the last several weeks completely unacceptable. This doesn have to be either or: you can appreciate all that has been done as you bemoan the current state of things. It okay to feel not okay.I could go over the stats and tell you all about everything Deuce Vaughn did (160 yards from scrimmage) or how a one-legged Skylar Thompson continuously made plays when he needed to. I could talk about the brewing quarterback controversy that isn Max Duggan is clearly not 100% but Chandler Morris didn exactly steal the job either or how worried we should be about Zach Evans. I could tell you that we should wipe the slate clean or that we should trust the man that brought us to this point, but ultimately that not a conversation that going to go any further than the internet, and the powers that be will make whatever decision they see fit whenever they see fit to make it. There so much that could be said, there some that should be said, and there a lot that we are all thinking. But at the end of the day, this team is broken, and there not much that can be done in the here and now to fix it.I love TCU and I have and will continue to support TCU Football.
